Lou & Mickey's, San Diego
We’ll be in San Diego this winter for a conference. Do you have dining recommendations besides Mexican and California cuisine?

We can heartily recommend "Lou & Mickey's" in the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp District. This newly opened restaurant is just across the street from the San Diego Waterfront Convention Center in the heart of the popular and energetic Gaslamp District.

Reborn late last year in the spacious home to the much respected “Brasserie Royale,” the more casual, yet attentive Lou & Mickey’s comfortably takes you back to an innocent, promising era. Swing and big band music soothes, yet invigorates. Lou & Mickey’s dark, rich paneling and period fixtures are made comfortable to modern senses through the use of imaginative lighting and well-planned spaces.
Taste and feel the ocean by beginning your evening with the Oyster Sampler. A beautiful presentation of six varieties of these delectable jewels of the sea. Thin slices of seared, spice crusted rare yellowfin tuna also won our enthusiastic applause.

Roasted beet salad with toasted goat cheese is a deserved holdover from the Brasserie’s menu. This wondrous treat reminded us that we must return to Paris as soon as possible. Until then we know just where to satisfy our craving for fine food, well presented and enthusiastically embraced.

The steaks are as you’d expect upon entering an establishment such as Lou & Mickey’s. The ambiance, decor, music, staff all combine to sing out, “Fans of beef and a quality drink are welcome here.” High quality, generous portions, prepared to your taste. The down side to satisfying your steak lust is that you’ll miss some fabulous seafood. The before mentioned seared yellowfin is also available in entree portions as well as imaginatively and tenderly prepared swordfish, mahi mahi, Atlantic salmon to name a few.

Service at Lou & Mickey’s was spot on. Attentive yet never in your way which allowed the finely prepared food and our own pleasures take center stage. As it should always be. We predict Lou & Mickey’s will be a hit with visitors and locals alike.

Lou & Mickey’s, 224 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA, (619) 237-4900.
